(a beautiful suburb of Kansas City).Area 51 is Garmin's internal product Research & Development team. From kids wearables and hybrid watches to the latest lidar and sonar technologies, we are in constant pursuit of new markets and cutting edge technologies. As a senior mechanical engineer, you will support these product and technology concepts throughout the exploration stages until transferring it to the product team. Essential functions include: Must be passionate, enthusiastic and enjoy exploration and hands-on work Must effectively demonstrate a self-starting, results-oriented, positive, proactive, solution-focused approach Master CAD-user able to complete the most difficult tasks Ability to customize existing, or develop new test methods to substantiate otherwise unverified aspects of product designs Explore innovative mechanical concepts and complete complex mechanical designs Review CAD assemblies for technical feasibility and apply first hand experience to risky items Mock up and test complex mechanical systems to verify compliance with design requirements Good knowledge of material requirements, material performance, and material limitations Specify test plans to validate very complex systems with complex performance requirements Excellent tradeoff management skills and ability to mitigate risk Ability to make estimates on complex and risky Mechanical designs including: tooling, part cost, and design time Excellent communication skills with the ability to drive process vendors to evaluate complex mechanical designs and understand the risk Knowledgeable of Industry and Garmin product qualification tests (environmental and others) Makes substantial contributions toward determination of project goal/objective feasibility Mentors and provides guidance to less experienced Mechanical Engineers (1 & 2) on all aspects of mechanical design Provides technical input to product development plans and concept documents Provides reliable solutions to a wide range of difficult problems using sound problem solving techniques Offers process improvement suggestions and authors new procedures as required Applies good judgment in setting schedules and risk taking Exemplifies Garmin's Mission Statement and Quality Policy and proactively works to improve Garmin's image and culture Independently determines general approach and specific solutions to technical problems Applies knowledge of production and operations issues as they relate to engineering Associates are expected to integrate, use, and provide feedback on products in development when possible as part of their normal job responsibilities Leads explorations of new technologies Participate in recruiting activities as assigned Perform other job-related duties as assigned Overseas travel as required Qualified candidates possess a Bachelors of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or Aerospace Engineering from a four-year college or university AND a minimum of 5 years relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Other requirements include: Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule) Demonstrated knowledge and capability to use CAD software for completing complex mechanical designs Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skill Bonus points if you have: Never been to KC?
