Job Overview:

The medical assistant is a medical professional who assists the ENT provider in caring for clinic visit patients and provides assistance with procedural cases. The medical assistant functions as a member of the ENT clinical team and collaborates with the team to provide compassionate, efficient care.

Primary Scope of Responsibilities:

Review scheduled patients in advance of clinic days. Assist with administrative duties, as needed, including chart preparation of medical records. Acquire patient diagnostic results or referring provider clinical notes prior to the clinic visit date and scan to the patient chart. Review the clinic schedule, with the provider, prior to the start of each clinic day. Take initiative to review each patient's history, in the EMR, to facilitate an efficient, effective patient visit. Anticipate potential issues based on the schedule and patient chief complaints. Maintain awareness of recent cancellations/add-ons, and clinic procedures. Assure required pre-certs are completed prior to procedures. Room patients, verify patient identity with name and date of birth, obtain vital signs, medical history, and current medications. Verify chief complaint, identify any additional problems and advise provider. Assist provider with patient care, procedures and treatments. Notify provider of any change in patient condition. Set up for procedures and assist when requested. Complete AVH time-out process for all procedures and assure patient safety. Record pertinent clinical documentation in the EMR in accordance with regulatory requirements, professional standards and hospital policy. Ensure accurate documentation including completion of all required forms, procedural consents, etc. Assure legibility of all hard copy documentation and include signature, date, and time. Assure all diagnostic ophthalmology testing documentation is accurate and complete prior to MD review. Assure patient questions and concerns are addressed during the clinic visit or with a follow up phone call. Assure each patient understands the plan of care. Provide thorough patient education, for the patient and family, recognizing the readiness to learn, preferred learning style, and self-care capabilities. Evaluate the effectiveness of patient learning. Utilize interpreter as needed. Schedule ENT surgical cases, and procedural cases. Coordinate pertinent details with ENT providers, Day Surgery Department. Create surgery packet files for each surgical patient case. Organize, coordinate and maintain all surgery case files. Label surgery packet documents with patient name, date of birth and medical record number. Scan documents and forward to the Day Surgery team. Coordinate any lab and/or imaging appointments. Collaborate with the Surgery department on lenses and any special equipment. Schedule all pre and post op clinic visits. Provide patient education for all surgical and procedural cases. Complete a post-surgery follow up phone call for each surgical case. Facilitate outgoing referrals from the ENT providers to other specialists. Administrative duties as needed, including: requests for documents from outside providers such as labs, past exams, previous operative reports, previous imaging. Enter/request new physicians be added into the EMR system; locate all relevant physician information (NPI, telephone, fax, address, etc) and place a request to the IT department staff to add the new provider to EMR. Serve in an advocacy role; encourage active involvement of patient and family in their care. Make value-added resource decisions for patient care with respect to supplies, equipment, and acuity of care. Assist patient and registrar staff with scheduling follow up visits and any diagnostic tests. Communicate and collaborate with all members of the hospital team in order to address patient care, resolve problems, and improve the delivery of multidisciplinary care on a daily basis. Facilitate patient flow and work flow in the clinic. Update the patient, family, and staff, as appropriate, of any delays or changes in the scheduling. Participate in Quality Improvement projects as needed/requested. Medication Management: Follow through on patient requests for medication refills/renewals, obtain orders as needed and refill prescriptions according to department policy. Provide sample medications, if carried in these specialties, as directed by the providers. Maintain medication sample in/out logs as applicable. Inspect medication sample storage area and dispose of expired medications as appropriate. Communicate with pharmaceutical representatives for samples as needed. Follow recommended cleaning guidelines for exam rooms and instrumentation. Utilize safe handling of equipment pre and post procedures. Follow established policies for handling and cleaning of contaminated instruments. Transport instruments, per AVH policy, to the Sterile Processing Department, in a timely manner, to assure equipment is readily available in the clinic for additional procedures. Monitor department supply levels and expiration dates. Order supplies as needed to maintain stock in the department.

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements:

The ability to maintain composure in stressful situations required Strong interpersonal skills required Ability to work independently required 1-3 years of experience in a healthcare environment preferred Bi-Lingual in Spanish is highly desired Knowledgeable in the use of medical terminology preferred. Medical Assistant Certification or EMT preferred BLS required within 3 months of hire

*Our hire-in rates of pay are based on years of relevant experience. Listed below are our hire-in rates for the position, which includes: minimum pay (no relevant experience) and mid-point (12 or more years).

Minimum = $19.35/hr

Mid-Point = $25.11/hr
