Job Overview: This is a nights position. The House Supervisor is a leadership role that assists with the supervision of hospital operations and patient care for an assigned 12-hour shift, and works to ensure smooth patient flow between departments and accurate admission status documentation. Primary Scope of Responsibilities: * Directs and manages the performance of front-line staff in collaboration with AVH leadership. Provides rapid assessment and intervention for high-risk events that arise in the course of hospital operations. * Assists with shift-based staffing and resource decisions in collaboration with AVH leadership and in accordance with budget and policy of AVH. * Provides performance appraisal documentation of selected staff at AVH on the request of AVH leadership. Is instrumental in implementing quality processes interdepartmentally and house-wide. * Assists AVH leadership with implementation of quality initiatives. * Maintains RN competencies in generalist practice; assisting and covering direct patient care in any area of the hospital as needed. Minimum level II competencies completed for ED, OB, ICU, PCU, SDS and PACU. * Able to supervise other nursing personnel in the development of an individualized problem based plan of care with appropriate nursing interventions. * Records pertinent clinical documentation in accordance with regulatory requirements, professional standards and hospital policy and assists others in compliance with documentation standards. * Prioritizes patient situations and takes appropriate action in an efficient, effective manner; across all departments of the hospital. * Responds to clinical needs of patients in accord with experience, nursing standards, and hospital/nursing policies and procedures. Advises and directs clinical personnel to ensure effective care. * Takes initiative for professional goals, role development and diversity of responsibilities within nursing practice; consistent with hospital mission and goals. * Provides direct supervision, coaching, feedback and/or immediate corrective discipline for hospital employees, as needed. Follows up with department directors afterward. Gives feedback about performance concerns to appropriate department director. Works collaboratively to address performance improvement. * Supports administrative strategic goals and objectives. * Promotes efficient staffing on concurrent and prospective basis to maximize flexibility and avoid unnecessary costs; works with department managers and administration to understand resource management plans. Assists team leaders with provision of break relief as necessary. * Works collaboratively with unit team leaders to manage patient bed placement. Assists as a staff resource in the patient care areas as needed. * Makes value-added resource decisions for patient care with respect to supplies, equipment, and acuity of care. * Understands the role of case management and infection control in the absence of those departments and assists with the incorporation of those elements as needed to provide seamless, timely patient care. * Adheres to all accepted patient safety standards and assist staff in doing the same. Provides individual direction and coaching to ensure high reliability of safe practices. * In the absence of Senior Leadership or Department Directors, interacts with the press/media as needed according to HIPAA regulations and hospital policies. * Encourages active involvement of all hospital employees, patients and their family in safe practices throughout the organization. * Identifies, documents and reports events that present actual or suspected risk to AVH. * Communicates with members of Medical Staff around clinical issues, behavior, quality of care or high risk situations as part of the "Chain of Command" policy. * Assists with housewide quality initiatives, even takes the leadership role on several initiatives in the organization. Works with clinical quality personnel to improve processes, following the PDSA cycle of performance improvement. * Trouble-shoots problems that may jeopardize hospital safety and security; including but not limited to: life safety, IT, security, HIPAA, hand-offs, EMTALA, status and documentation compliance and other regulatory elements. Actively participates in disaster plans and "code" level situations. * Fosters effective cross-departmental communication in order to address patient care, resolve problems, and improve the delivery of multidisciplinary care on a daily basis. * Applies individual and group problem solving; shares knowledge with others freely, consults openly, and assists others to interpret data; serves as a role model for effective conflict resolution. * Uses verbal and written communication methods effectively, encourages other hospital personnel to do the same. * Works with other hospital owned entities, including Whitcomb Terrace, to provide a continuum of care that is seamless. Assists staff as needed with quality initiatives. * Understands the needs of all departments during the shift in order to re-allocate human resources as needed to assist in a department with immediate personnel needs. * Responds to and assists with quick resolution of patient and/or family complaints. * Patient registration liaison for all admissions, verifies patient status upon review and/or discussion with the medical staff (Extended Recovery, Observation, Inpatient, SDS, or Swing). * Completes an accurate end of shift report on the intranet form and alerts department directors and/or executive team members of significant problems * Demonstrates role awareness and seeks individualized/department specific continuing education that improves patient care or professional practice: attends AVH leadership development class as recommended by the immediate supervisor. * Provides annual performance appraisal of staff nurses as assigned. Works closely with unit Directors to ensure high caliber nursing practice performance throughout the hospital. Minimum Qualifications & Requirements: * Minimum 5 years of RN experience * Associate Degree in Nursing; BSN graduate preferred * Current Colorado nursing license or temporary permit * Current BLS certification * Other Required: ACLS, PALS, NRP, TNCC * Recommended: ENPC, STABLE, PFCCS, FCCS Benefits & Compensation: Hire-in rates of pay are based upon the relevance of years of experience, education and certifications.
