Job Description:
Under general supervision and according to established policies
and procedures, this employee provides medical assistance under the
direction of the clinic physicians in both the ENT Clinic and
Ophthalmology Clinic within scope of practice. Duties include
facilitating clinic operations including clinic preparation,
maintaining clinic flow, cleaning exam rooms between patients and
cleaning dirty instruments according to policy. Accurate completion
and documentation of MA clinic note including vital signs, chief
complaint and assessment as appropriate. Assist MD with procedures,
surgery scheduling and diagnostics scheduling along with
appropriate follow up. Provide patient education as appropriate and
complete the patient discharge process at the end of each visit.
Answer patient phone calls and prescription refill requests in a
timely manner. Communicate and coordinate information in a
knowledgeable and courteous manner with patients, families, and
staff. Assure patient safety and maintain confidentiality with
patients, family members, and staff. Enter applicable charges each
day and assure the patient record is complete. The medical
assistant practices exceptional customer service and
professionalism in all aspects of this role.
TECHNICIAN
Fully competent in the medical assistant role in the
ENT/Ophthalmology Clinic. Assist MD as needed with patient care
including vital signs, meeting basic needs of patient and patient
positioning. Notify MD of any change in patient condition.
Record pertinent clinical documentation in accordance with
regulatory requirements, professional standards and hospital
policy. Ensure accurate documentation including completion of all
required forms, sign, date, time, and legibility of all
documentation, scan documents as needed. Provide follow up for any
questions or concerns. Return phone calls in a timely manner. In
the ENT/Ophthalmology Clinic, documentation includes the face
sheet, medication reconciliation, MA clinic note, medication refill
form, patient education, and visit/discharge summary.
Prioritize clinic and patient needs and take appropriate action in
an efficient, effective manner.
Respond to clinical needs of patients in accord with experience,
nursing standards, and hospital/nursing policies and
procedures.
Assists with scheduling of patient appointments as needed.
Make value-added resource decisions for patient care with respect
to supplies, equipment, and acuity of care.
PATIENT TEACHING
Provide individualized patient and family education consistent with
patient's learning style, readiness to learn and self-care
needs
Evaluate the effectiveness of patient learning.
CARE COORDINATION
Communicate and collaborate with all members of the clinic team and
hospital team in order to address patient care, resolve problems,
and improve the delivery of multidisciplinary care on a daily basis
and facilitate work flow in the clinic.
Apply individual and group problem solving; shares knowledge with
others freely, consults openly, and assists others to interpret
data
Use verbal and written communication methods effectively.
PATIENT SAFETY AND CONFIDENTIALITY
Adhere reliably to all accepted patient safety standards and
assists in maintaining a clean, safe, organized environment of
care.
Serve in an advocacy role; encouraging active involvement of
patient and family in their care.
Follow all security, confidentiality, and privacy policies
UNIT SPECIFIC DUTIES/DAY TO DAY OPERATIONS
Demonstrate competency in all aspects of patient care including:
initial assessment of the patient and assisting the
Otolaryngologist/Ophthalmologist as needed with clinic visits;
obtaining an interpreter as needed; patient education; triaging of
phone calls; and follow up patient care management including
scheduling.
Set up for procedures and assist when requested. Complete AVH
time-out process for all procedures and assure patient safety.
Follow recommended cleaning policies for exam room and
instrumentation.
Prioritize work load to meet the needs of patients and the
clinic.
Participate in CQI activities as needed/requested.
Participate and contribute to unit meetings and activities.
Provide discharge instructions to patients and their families.
Coordinate plan of care with MD and complete visit summary.
Assist with follow up phone calls after surgery or when patients
have questions.
Assist with ordering and restocking of supplies and ensuring
adequate office and clinic supplies are available. Check for
expired stock & discard according to policy
Assist with flow of patients through the clinic. Update the
patient, family, and staff, as appropriate, of any delays or
changes in the scheduling.
Allow each patient the opportunity to be involved in
decision-making as appropriate.
Coordinate and manage the surgery schedule for the practice. Assist
with pre and post op teaching.
Medication Management: Follow through on patient requests for
medication refills/renewals - obtain MD orders as needed and refill
prescriptions according to department policy.
Utilize safe handling practices with equipment pre and post
procedures. Assist with coordination of sterile processing to
assure equipment and supplies are available in the clinic for
procedures.
Assist with receptionist/scheduling duties as needed including
preparing medical records, filing, scheduling appointments, and
accurately charging.
Other duties as assigned.

Ensure developmentally appropriate care of all pediatric, adult,
and geriatric populations in the ENT/Ophthalmology Clinic.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
* High school graduate preferred
* Medical experience preferred
* Medical Technology Certification preferred
LICENSE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATIONS
* BLS required
* EMT-I preferred

* Our hire-in rates of pay are based on years of relevant
experience. Listed below are our hire-in rates for the position,
which includes: minimum pay (no relevant experience) and mid-point
(12 or more years).
Minimum = $21.29/hr
Mid-Point = $27.67/hr
